Comprehensive Railroad Planning Services

Specialized Expertise

Cost effective rail infrastructure planning, construction and maintenance demands specialized engineering expertise. As rail experts and operators, our rail infrastructure services not only include design and specification, but execution as well. CANAC has unparalleled experience within the railroad industry from complex mainline, commuter and passenger railroad facilities to yard, terminal and industrial sites throughout North America. Our services include track maintenance, track design, rehabilitation and construction, facilities design and rail operations simulations and design.

CANAC’s comprehensive track design, construction and maintenance capabilities mean that we can take your project from the concept stage all the way to fully operational. Drawing on our depth and breadth of expertise and experience in all areas of rail operations, we develop the best solution to your real world problems. Utilizing the latest technology, our design professionals can tackle any size project. Coupling this capability with our construction and maintenance experience means we deliver added value where you need it most. Our approach is based not only on our expertise in designing and building facilities which integrate effectively with customer operations, but also on our unparalleled experience in day-to-day rail operations. This allows us to consider the dynamics of the operational requirements that are critical to a successful design, one that is flexible and can change to match both current and projected business needs.

Our specially designed software incorporating today's most advanced technology, is geared to help you increase operating efficiency, develop low cost solutions, and minimize congestion on mainline corridors and in terminals. Our resources include proven computer simulation and modeling tools to analyze, evaluate and offer operational solutions such as the Railway Analysis and Interactive Line Simulator (RAILS2000) model which features advanced mainline network and terminal animation capabilities.

Our full line of planning and infrastructure services includes:

  • Transportation Planning
  • Line/Terminal Capacity Planning, Design & Operational Modeling
  • Track Design
  • Industrial Site Design and Optimization Studies
  • Load-out studies
  • Intermodal Operations and Terminal Planning
  • Incident Investigation

Operations Modeling -- RAILS2000 Simulation System

The objective of rail operations modeling is to test, refine, and measure the impact of proposed plant, rolling stock, operational, and maintenance program enhancements. Benefits are typically measured in terms of improved capacity, speed, reliability, and schedule feasibility.

CANAC is in a virtually unique position to offer the most accurate railroad capacity analysis program available, the Railway Analysis & Interactive Line Simulator (RAILS2000) simulation model, in combination with our team of acknowledged rail operations experts. The simulation process augments the objectivity and credibility of engineering, rail operations and design principles used in developing the most appropriate capital investment plan for the rail operations.

RAILS2000 is a true event-based simulation model. The engine is logic based, with optimizing capabilities deliberately limited to emulate real-world train dispatching. The model is capable of handling both linear corridors and complex networks.

Industrial Site Design and Optimization Studies

We provide practical, low-cost solutions for your product handling, storage and distribution challenges, specifically:

  • New, upgraded or expanded rail facilities (plant/terminal track layout plans including receiving, departure and storage tracks)- Commodity loading/unloading operations planning
  • Track inspection, evaluation & maintenance (large-scale rail relay, tie replacement, track rehabilitation)
  • Rail interface planning for trucking or barge terminals
  • Railcar fleet management issues/data collection systems

Locomotive and Train Simulation System (TRNSIM)

CANAC’s TRNSIM application is a real-time computer system that simulates a train consist on a specified territory. With over 20 years of use in the railway industry, this program has been developed to analyse a wide variety of freight and passenger trains operating in a range of track environments. The program has been continually upgraded to improve accuracy as new technology becomes available. TRNSIM has been used for:

  • Training locomotive engineers
  • Conducting Train Handling Studies to maximize train performance while minimizing in-train forces
  • Investigating the root cause of derailment using TRNSIM and L/V calculations
  • Analyzing Service Design Problems related to train consists and operating performance

We can undertake assessments and inspections of railway bridges, as well as fatigue life and rating capacity studies using computer-assisted bridge testing programs and hi-rail mounted vehicles. Our P-811 track-renewal machine facilitates your line upgrading and can undercut ballast and lay ties and rail in a single operation.

Passenger Rail Operations

Whether your project involves carrying out a passenger volume study or building and operating a complete rail service, we put our know-how to work for you. Based on our experience in freight rail, CANAC is singularly qualified to develop win-win compromise solutions on rail capacity issues. We use proven computer simulation and modeling tools to analyze, evaluate and produce solutions for various operational problems such as the Railway Analysis and Interactive Simulator (RAILS) model which features mainline network and passenger terminal animation capabilities and the Long Line Capacity model.
